Lately the Memphis Food Truck scene has been blowing up. It seems like every day I see a new food truck I haven’t heard of tweeting their location and menu of the day, and luckily I work downtown so often there’s one close to me. Today was the second Memphis Food Truck Rodeo on Broad Avenue, a great opportunity for Memphians to find several of Memphis’ finest food trucks in one spot. Apparently last time there were some kinks to work out (long lines, bad location), but this time everything seemed to go great. No one was in the road, there’s plenty of free parking in the area, and I didn’t see anyone waiting too long or huge lines. There were about 12-15 trucks there including Yolo, Crumpy’s, Fuel, Quincy’s, Tamale Trolley, Mark’s Grill, Memphis Munchies, A Square Meal on Wheels, Revival Southern Food Company, and several others.
I’ve been wanting to try Fuel so I went for the Veggie Tacos. They were stupendous! Full of fresh salsa, cilantro, avocado, delicious beans, and in a yummy local corn tortilla, they were even better than I had expected! I would be in trouble if that truck were near me all the time because those tacos are killer.
There was a huge selection at the Food Truck Rodeo. Burgers, sandwiches, turkey legs, tacos, tamales, lemonade, fried bologna sandwiches, gelato, corn dogs, sno cones, and plenty of vegetarian options. The place was packed (but not too much) and I got there early, even before a band apparently played.
Considering that it was 98 degrees today and people were hanging out at noon in a concrete lot to eat lunch, it’s evident they’ve got a good thing going. It was only the second Rodeo and people are already asking if they’ll have it in different parts of town, and maybe even Arkansas or Mississippi. I’m not sure what they would have to work out permit-wise for that because I know just getting them running in Memphis was a pain, so out of state might be too much of a hassle. Either way, I’m excited that Memphis finally has a good Food Truck scene going! For more photos look at my Flickr album. Those tacos look delicious! I’m so happy Memphis has gotten into the food truck craze, too. Mmmm.
