Rock’n Dough Pizza Co.

16 Feb image_6

Rock’n Dough Pizza Co., has been a much-loved food truck in Memphis for awhile, but now they also have a storefront in East Memphis.

I went for the first time today for lunch, and it was amazeballs!  I almost wish they’d opened a place farther from my workplace, because my metabolism isn’t what it used to be, and it’s dangerous to know that on a daily basis I’m less than a five minute drive from their delicious pizza. According to their facebook, the pizza is cooked on pizza stones heated to a ridiculous 700 degrees, and hickory wood is used to give the pizza a distinct Memphis flavor.   The inside is very red and cute, and if everyone thinks they’re as awesome as I do they’ll need to expand soon, because there are only about seven tables for dine-in customers.

I opted to go with the house favorite – the Margherita pizza, and a farmer’s market salad.  The staff was incredibly friendly, happy to explain what was in everything, and wore hilarious shirts with giant pizzas on them.  After I’d ordered, I was directed by the nice pizza man to tell his momma who was working the register what I had ordered so I could pay and get my drink.

Less than 7 minutes after I sat down my food was delivered, and it was a beauty to behold!  The pizza was extra saucy and had olive oil drizzled over it, and also plenty of fresh tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil.  I’m not usually a pizza crust eater.  I’d rather save more room for cheesy goodness, but the crust on this pizza was so chewy delicious that I ate it all, and that’s definitely not something I do very often. The salad was lovingly prepared with fresh red and yellow bell pepper, spring mix, english cucumber, and yellow and red grape tomatoes with a housemade vinaigrette.  And as you can see, the one slice I ordered was really two!  All this, drink included, was only $9.83 before tip!

Rock'N Dough Pizza Co.When I was ordering I was told that soon the menu will be expanding to include sandwiches, and there were several interesting looking pizzas on the menu like the Bacon Cheeseburger pie.

Definitely visit Rock’n Dough and give them your money.  They’re a local company putting out fresh, delicious, affordable food with a Memphis twist in a friendly atmosphere.  Hey guys, do you plan on getting beer anytime soon?  It would be pretty epic to sneak away from the office for a slice and a Ghost River at lunch.

Aldo’s Pizza Pies – Memphis

2 Aug

Today we tried Aldo’s Pizza Pies, a new restaurant on South Main Street in downtown Memphis.  It’s apparently owned by the same people who own Bar Dog (a place I love) and Slider Inn, both Memphis favorites, so expectations are high and people have been buzzing about it since it was first announced.

The restaurant is gorgeous with lots of stained hardwood and high ceilings.  They have specialty pizzas, pizza by the slice, lunch specials, and build your own pizza, as well as appetizers, salads, and (after their official opening) sandwiches.

We ordered a jalapeno and pineapple pizza from the build your own menu.  It’s one of our standards and our waitress told us the chef said it was one of the best combos he’s seen.  The pizza was delicious and the crust was chewy and not too crispy.  I can’t wait to try some of the specialty pizzas! Look at that cheesy deliciousness! (Beware though, those jalapenos are HOT!)

The restaurant is currently in a soft-opening, but was already packed, even on a Wednesday.  The patio has fans and misters, so it should be an awesome place for evening drinks, even on sweaty summer days.  The atmosphere is fun, the staff is attentive, the lunch special is cheap, and the beer list is lengthy!

Visit Aldo’s Pizza Pies!  This place is a keeper!

New Que Huong – Collierville, TN

2 Jul

Last weekend a food blogger I follow posted on Facebook about how great Collierville Vietnamese restaurant New Que Huong is.  After reading only good reviews on everything from their food to their service and atmosphere, I convinced a friend to make the drive out with me so we could try something new.  A little tricky to find and tucked in the corner of a shopping plaza, New Que Huong is a cute, comfortable restaurant with fun decorations.

Cute Lobby

I ordered Spring Rolls to start and they were brought out very quickly.  They had fresh mint, tomato, noodles, fried tofu, and the usual gummy spring roll wrapper, along with a thick peanut sauce to dip in.  I’ve had spring rolls before, but never with this amount of fresh herb in them.  The mint was refreshing but also threw me off because I wasn’t expecting it!

Minty Spring Roll

My friend got a Lotus Root Salad that came with these amazing chips.  I stole a couple because they were so irresistible and crunchy.

I took a chance on the Lemongrass Tofu here. I’ve had samples of Lemongrass Tofu before that had sort of a dry spice rub instead of a sauce which turned me off of it.  Here the tofu was cooked perfectly and had a thick, tangy sauce instead of a dry texture, which I loved! It was spicy, but not too spicy, and there was plenty of it served with a big side of sticky white rice.

My friend ordered a Bahn Mi that had yummy crusty bread stuffed with meat, veggies, and cilantro (which he took off). Banh Mi

When we were finished our waitress brought us a complimentary dessert of oranges and the fluffiest, most refreshing little pieces of mango cake.  It was the perfect end to our amazing lunch!

Mango Cake!

New Que Huong is amazing and affordable.  Our waitress was nice and funny, our food came quickly and exceeded our expectations, and my friend and I both agreed the fountain soda there is especially good for some reason.  I can’t wait to go back! It’s absolutely worth making the drive to Collierville.  Give it a shot!

Memphis Food Truck Rodeo – June 24, 2012

25 Jun

Lately the Memphis Food Truck scene has been blowing up.  It seems like every day I see a new food truck I haven’t heard of tweeting their location and menu of the day, and luckily I work downtown so often there’s one close to me.  Today was the second Memphis Food Truck Rodeo on Broad Avenue, a great opportunity for Memphians to find several of Memphis’ finest food trucks in one spot.   Apparently last time there were some kinks to work out (long lines, bad location), but this time everything seemed to go great.  No one was in the road, there’s plenty of free parking in the area, and I didn’t see anyone waiting too long or huge lines.  There were about 12-15 trucks there including Yolo, Crumpy’s, Fuel, Quincy’s, Tamale Trolley, Mark’s Grill, Memphis Munchies, A Square Meal on Wheels, Revival Southern Food Company, and several others.

I’ve been wanting to try Fuel so I went for the Veggie Tacos.  They were stupendous! Full of fresh salsa, cilantro, avocado, delicious beans, and in a yummy local corn tortilla, they were even better than I had expected!  I would be in trouble if that truck were near me all the time because those tacos are killer.

Lunchbox Eats Review

10 Feb

YOU GUYS!  How have I lived in Memphis nearly six months and no one has told me about Lunchbox Eats? I work downtown! And still no one told me!  It’s an adorable sandwich shop that has imaginative, delicious food and sticks to a fun school theme.  The menus are on notebook paper, and you order by marking what you want on a quiz sheet! A QUIZ SHEET! And the food comes on a cafeteria tray! A CAFETERIA TRAY!

I ordered the Extra Curricula Portabella sandwich, which came with marinated portabella, zucchini and asparagus, diced tomato, and was between two pieces of crispy phyllo!  I also ordered a special side of the day, Avocado Jo Jos!

Jeremy got the Homeroom Chicken and Grids, a fried chicken and waffle sandwich served with a side of Honey Mustard.

And some of the sides come in these awesome brown bags!

The lemonade of the day was caramelized pineapple (what?!), but we got sweet tea that came in a wide mouth mason jar.

I absolutely love this place! The food was all delicious and the staff was very friendly.  The atmosphere and attention to detail was fun and impressive.  They had plenty of vegetarian options, including sides such as Kale Chips and Fried Brussel Sprouts.  They also have some insanely good looking meat dishes, and I’m pretty sure I saw a sandwich that had macaroni and cheese on it.  The only bad aspect of our first visit was that it took awhile to get our check.  It seemed they had one ipad they were taking table to table to check people out with, so I ended up getting back to work a little bit late.  They were packed though, so I’m not holding that against them.

Please go there!

Crazy Noodle

15 Jan

Today we tried a new restaurant on Madison Avenue called Crazy Noodle.  It’s right next to Kwik Chek, a midtown Memphis staple that has amazing Falafel, Gyros, Bi Bim Bop and Muffulettas.  I was excited to try this place because I’ve been hurtin’ for some good noodles since we left Asheville.  Luckily, Crazy Noodle didn’t let us down.

Image

I ordered the Veggie Noodle Soup and it was DELICIOUS!  The vegetable broth is so spicy and it’s full of noodles, onions, mushrooms, peppers, and yummy potatoes.  I was very pleasantly surprised because the menu description doesn’t mention that it’s spicy.  It just says “vegetable broth” so I was scared it would be a bland, normal vegetable soup in a plain broth.  Not at all, as you can see below.

Image

Jeremy got the chicken noodle soup, which looked similar but he said had a totally different flavor.  Both were less than $10.  They had plenty of other vegetarian options on the menu, including a yummy looking wheat noodle dish that had kim chee and turnips, and a sweet potato side dish that I have to try.

When we went the place seemed to be working out some kinks. The server was nice, but it took a while to get our food, and it noticeably wasn’t just a problem with our table, so I wouldn’t recommend going if you’re in a rush.  However, the wait was so worth it and I’m already craving more of that spicy deliciousness.

Los Tortugas

19 Dec

Oh, Los Tortugas.  Ever since my friend Kandi introduced me to this cute little Mexican restaurant I’ve been in love.  It’s a family establishment, and the owner, Pepe,  goes shopping every morning for the produce to be served that day.  He’ll also have no problems telling you exactly what to order if you’re stumped, as I was the last time we went there.  By the time we arrived most of the specials of the day were already sold out , so I just asked Pepe what would be best for a vegetarian .  He asked “Do you like avocados?”  Of course I answered “Yes,” and he replied, “I’ve got the perfect thing for you,” and just rung it up.  And he was right!  I had a delicious avocado Torta with tomatoes and lettuce and a side of their perfect elote, plus chips and salsa.

Jeremy got the chicken mole´and it was delicious too!  And so pretty!

Los Tortugas is worth the drive to Germantown, but make sure you check the hours first.  They won’t let you eat there if it’s close to closing time, and they don’t stay open late like a lot of places.

South of Beale Restaurant Review

28 Sep

Today I went on a lunch date to South of Beale, a.k.a. SOB, which is a lovely little gastropub in downtown Memphis.  It’s clean, well-lit, has parking, and the menu is modern and intriguing.  There’s house made cheese and meats, dishes with fun twists like maple bacon braised brussels sprouts and leek macaroni and cheese, and Lord the desserts.  I can not wait to try the Jack Daniels ice cream with coca-cola bread pudding.

First off we were brought a complimentary bowl of sweet and spicy popcorn.  I couldn’t stop munching it!

We ended up here because my boyfriend HAD TO HAVE the Duck Confit Salad, which comes with granny smith apples, goat cheese fritters, and a balsamic vinaigrette.   I had one of the goat cheese fritters and was absolutely in heaven.  I want a whole plate just of those.

I got the grilled vegetable sandwich, which was on a delicious slightly toasted roll, had avacado mayonnaise, eggplant, roasted red pepper, tomato, onion, and greens.  It came with a side which I switched out for the leek mac and cheese.

I absolutely loved both.  I ate every bite.  The sandwich was delicious and the perfect size.  The bread was good quality and the avacado mayo was spot-on.  The leek mac and cheese was great and nothing like what I call the “bucket macaroni” you’ll find in a lot of restaurants.  It still had bite to it and wasn’t just mushy mac and cheese out of a bucket.  It was delicious and the leeks made it a more grown up option.   SOB also has an impressive full bar with lots of specialty drinks, and they serve the locally brewed Ghost River beer.  I saw a pumpkin pie martini and several cocktails featuring Evan Williams, my household’s drink of choice, so I definitely plan to go back just for drinks soon.

The prices are good, there are plenty of delicious vegetarian options, there’s easily accessible parking, a deck, and the service was quick and friendly.  My ONE complaint — NO SWEET TEA!  It’s the south!  Come on, y’all!

Go to South of Beale for lunch, dinner, or brunch!  Report back!
